Dennis Yost And The Classics IV

初次認識Dennis Yost And The Classics IV這支樂隊組合，是約於上世紀1973年時份，筆者的一位弟弟從同學家中借來數張外語唱片，其中之一就是他們於1969年灌錄的《Traces》長壽唱片。聽畢這唱片後，筆者除被Dennis Yost他那獨特的柔軟嗓子深深吸引外，其收錄的眾多慢板抒情歌曲，日後每當思緒低落之際，它們往往就成了筆者抒憂解愁的最佳良伴。

出生於美國密歇根州底特律市 (Detroit)的Dennis Yost，本是五十年代末佛羅里達州傑克遜維爾市 (Jacksonville)內一支名為The Echoes樂隊的成員，六十年代中The Echoes拆夥後，Dennis Yost加入了另一支名為Leroy & The Moments的組合，成員包括了James Cobb Jr.、Wally Eaton及Joe Wilson，樂隊名字被改為The Classics。1966年，他們簽約Capitol Records公司，灌錄了首張的單曲唱片《Pollyanna．Cry Baby》；其後，基於一支來自紐約市布魯克林區 (Brooklyn)的同名合唱團威脅採取法律行動下，他們再把樂隊的名字改為The Classics IV。1967年1月，第二張的單曲唱片《Little Darling．Nothing To Lose》出版後，他們把發展基地移往喬治亞州的亞特蘭大市 (Atlanta)；同年夏季，樂隊轉投Liberty Records公司旗下的Imperial Records，加盟後灌錄的首張單曲唱片《Spooky．Poor People》於9月間面世，主打歌的"Spooky"經全國各地眾多電台熱播後，曾攀上美國Billboard Hot 100流行榜的第3位及英國樂壇流行榜的第46<位，銷量超越百多萬張。1968年，樂隊引進了Kim Venable作為鼓手以讓Dennis Yost可全身投入其台前主唱角色，James Cobb也轉向專注於幕後的编寫歌曲工作，由Auburn Burrell替代他的主音結他手位置，Dean Daughtry則替補離隊的和音結他兼鍵琴手Joe Wilson，組合亦改稱為Classics IV Featuring Dennis Yost；雖然他們灌錄的第二張長壽唱片《Mamas And Papas．Soul Train》於推出後的市場反應欠佳，惟其內的"Stormy"改以《Stormy．24 Hours Of Loneliness》這單曲唱片形式面世後，卻突然廣受樂迷歡迎，並於年終時段登上流行榜的第5位。1969年3月，他們演譯的一首情歌"Traces"剛推出後，火速升上流行榜的第2位，而其收錄的單曲唱片《Traces．Mary, Mary Row Your Boat》與上述《Stormy．24 Hours Of Loneliness》那張的各自銷量，同樣都是超過百多萬之作，加上另一首的"Everyday with Your Girl"亦能擠身流行榜的第19位，成績可算是極為理想；同年5月，樂隊管理層在以Bill Gilmore替補了因遇上車禍受傷的低音結他手Wally Eaton之餘，更招攬了一位新成員English White出任色士風手、及繼後於七十年代初，再一次把組合名字改成為Dennis Yost And The Classics IV。

經歷了1970與1971這兩年絕不如意的灌唱成績後，樂隊於1972年轉投另一唱片陣營的MGM South Records公司，灌錄了三張單曲及一張長壽唱片，分別是《What Am I Crying For?．All In Your Mind》、《Rosanna．One Man Show》、《Make Me Believe It．Save The Sunlight》及《What Am I Crying For?．Rosanna．Make Me Believe It》，但只有"What Am I Crying For?"這歌曾登進流行榜的第39位。1974年，一路以來支撐着樂隊背後的兩位重要製作骨幹Buddy Buie及James Cobb Jr.，連同和音結他兼鍵琴手Dean Daughtry，宣佈離隊並加入了往常與他們有着密切關係的Atlanta Rhythm Section樂隊。

Dennis Yost，這位曾被稱譽為一位經典的歌手及Southern Soft Rock類型格調歌曲的創造者，儘管昔日的長期合作夥伴離他而去，惟他於1975年約滿MGM South Records後，仍秉承一貫以演譯抒情風格歌曲為主的路線，以個人獨唱方式或沿用原有組合名義，延續其演唱事業生涯至新的世紀。1993年，他憑着過往傑出的歌唱成就，獲登上喬治亞州的音樂名人殿堂內。2001年，他成功渡過了一項咽喉手術後，聲線得以完全康復，也令他能以原本的音調唱出所有他從前曾演譯的歌曲。2006年7月11日，他在家中從樓梯跌下，腦部遭受嚴重的創傷；為援助他與其妻應付有關的醫療開支，一班昔日五十至七十年代的樂界同業及藝人，於2007年3月27日在俄亥俄州 (Ohio) 辛辛那提市 (Cincinnati)籌辦了一場為他個人募款的音樂會活動，雖然這場盛會最終並不能如預期般可令他及其妻受惠，然而能有機會與眾多老朋友相聚重逢，對他來說實是一巨大的鼓舞。

2008年12月7日，Dennis Yost因呼吸衰竭(Respiratory Failure)離世，終年六十五，R.I.P.。

如今，Dennis Yost他那美妙的歌聲，他柔柔演繹的"Traces"、"Mr. Blue"、"Stormy"、"Our Day Will Come"、"Everyday with You Girl"、"Something I'll Remember"、"Sunny"、"Nobody Loves You But Me"，還有很多、很多，仍深深陶醉於筆者的腦海中.....

Rare Earth In Concert

喜愛搖滾樂的昔日資深港澳樂迷朋友，尤其是過往曾出任業餘或職業樂手的那一群， 《Rare Earth In Concert》這張由美國Motown公司於1971年出版的長壽唱片(LP)，可說是繼Deep Purple的《Machine Head》、Santana的《Gold Disc》、Led Zeppelin的 《Led Zeppelin IV》之餘，他們在上世紀七十年代初至中期的家中、務必擁有的另一張經典收藏。記憶中，當年某本地樂評人，曾談及若有個別以資深搖滾樂手或樂迷身份者自居，然而卻未嘗聆聽過該唱片內的精彩歌曲，則其必屬"好打有限"之輩...

於1960年成立時取名為The Sunliners及於1968年改為現有名稱的Rare Earth，是一支來自美國密歇根州底特律市(Detroit)的樂隊組合，初期成員為：Gil Bridges(Saxophone/Flute/Vocals)，Peter Rivera (Hoorelbeke) (Lead Vocals/Drums)，John Persh (Bass Guitar/Trombone/Vocals)，Rod Richards(Guitar/Vocals)及Kenny James (Keyboards)，以演譯R&B格調歌曲為主。他們首張的長壽唱片，是1968年為Verve公司灌錄的《Dreams/Answers》專集，惟成績不佳。1969年，轉投Motown，灌錄了《Get Ready》長壽唱片專集，但推出後反應仍是未如理想。1970年，他們修改了原收錄於去年專集內"Get Ready"這支長達21分27秒的歌曲，把首段約3分鐘的原曲部份以單曲唱片形式出版；面世後竟意外地大受歡迎，把The Temptations於1966年演譯的原唱版比下去，最高峯時曾登上美國Billboard Hot 100流行榜的第4位及1970年終榜的第8位，總銷量超越百多萬張，並順勢惠及先前出版的同名長壽唱片專集，令其可攀上了年終榜的首二十位內；此後，樂隊的聲勢亦日趨漸隆。

1970至1971這兩年間，可說是Rare Earth身處的最巔峰時期，曾登進流行榜不俗位置內的灌唱歌曲也有不少，包括了 "(I Know) I'm Losing You" (另一首的The Temptations的原唱曲)、"Born to Wander"、I Just Want to Celebrate及"Hey, Big Brother"，分別收錄於兩張長壽唱片專集《Ecology》、《One World》及單曲唱片〈"Hey, Big Brother"/"Under God’s Light"〉內。

I Love You – People

People，這支上世紀六十年代來自美國加洲 San Jose的樂隊名字，或許對於不少的昔日資深港澳流行樂迷們而言，印象中可能已感到頗為陌生；惟若把話題轉了為該樂隊於1968年一首曾風靡世界眾多國家地區的經典歌曲"I Love You"，樂迷們的心情又豈能不頓時變得恍然大悟似的呢.....

記憶中，首次接觸"I Love You"這歌是在唸小學高班期間，某天下午下課後，正如常地在校門前等待校巴接載回家之際，從毗鄰校舍的民居收音機中傳出，那自此成了筆者迄今仍認為是"妙到毫巔"難忘的一曲。

I Love You"本是英國搖滾樂隊The Zombies低音結他手Chris White於1965年的作品，但其組合灌唱的原版本面世時，受落程度僅是一般。1968年初，隸屬Capitol唱片公司的People樂隊把這歌重編，並加添了一段富迷幻搖滾(Psychedelic Rock)格調色彩的Instrumental作為前奏。灌成的單曲唱片於同年2月出版及經多番推廣宣傳攻勢後，迅即暢銷全球廣泛區域，總銷量超越百多萬張。時至7月，他們首張的長壽唱片《People！- I Love You》專集亦面世了。

經歷了連串的成員變動及繼後並不理想的灌唱成果下，People最終於1971年解體。環顧歐西流行樂壇史上，他們雖然只是一支典型的One-Hit Wonder組合，惟卻能成功掌握了當年潮流的趨勢契機，以一些嶄新的音樂意境效果，來配合演譯了一首別人先前未能唱紅的歌曲，也足以令他們的名字能片刻揚名於世及登進San Jose市的搖滾樂名人殿堂內。

Dana - Rex及GTO年代的長行唱片及CD專集

Dana，這位憑藉一曲"All Kinds Of Everything"成名的愛爾蘭女歌手，相信對於上世紀六七十年代大部份的港澳流行樂迷來說，印象中的她，可能只是流於僅是一名「一曲歌后 (One-Hit Wonder) 」而已。惟在筆者的記憶中，她昔日效力Rex及GTO唱片公司期內，其實還有着其它不少頗受歡迎的歌曲出現過，而當中的一些更曾被數位當年著名的香港女歌星翻唱，如陳秋霞(Chelsia Chan)的"Are You Still Mad At Me"、陳美齡(Agnes Chan)的"Can That Girl Be Me？"、利慧詩(Gracie Rivera)的"Please Tell Him That I Said Hello"、"Fairytale"、"There's Nothing You Can Do To Change My Mind"、"New Days…New Ways"等。

原名Rosemary Brown的Dana，出生於1951年8月31日於英國首都倫敦市北部的Islington區，北愛爾蘭德里市(Derry)是其父親的故鄉。Dana五歲時，適逢倫敦地區的煙霧污染情况極為惡劣，父母為顧及家中年幼子女的健康，舉家遷返德里市。回到故鄉的一年後，年僅六歲的她參加了一項公開的天才表演比賽，以演唱一首傳統愛爾蘭搖籃曲獲得冠軍。而自此以後，音樂與舞蹈成為了她成長過程中的重要部份；除學會了彈奏鋼琴、小提琴及結他外，亦是校內合唱團的成員及參與很多地區上的節日表演及比賽，其間她曾有片刻意念冀望日後能成為一名芭蕾舞教師。

六十年代初期，她的兩位胞姊Eileen及Susan成立了一支三人合唱組，在由她們父親籌辦的慈善音樂會中演唱。1965年，這兩位胞姊因分別為了發展個人工作事業及結婚的原故離隊後，Dana遂以個人身份，參加了一民謠歌曲比賽，贏到了首名，而其獎品就是由賽事贊助者Tony Johnston負責為她錄製一歌曲聲帶樣本。該聲帶被送往愛爾蘭都柏林市(Dublin)Decca唱片公司旗下的Rex唱片公司後，迅即獲當時的唱片經理Michael Geoghegan接納及簽下灌唱合約。

1967年11月，她首張的個人單曲唱片面世，A面是其早期經理人Tony Johnston的作品"Sixteen"，B面則是由她本人作曲的"Little Girl Blue"；而其時在就讀第六班(Sixth Form)的A-Level音樂及英語科目之際，她每逢週末都會於都柏林市(Dublin)內的某些歌舞廳及民謠歌曲演唱場所中亮相，聲名漸露。

翌年的1968，她灌錄了第二張的《Come Along Murphy．Patrick O'Donnell》及第三張的《 Heidschi Bumbeidschi．Ten Second Girl 》單曲唱片。

1969年，她循Rex唱片公司秘書Phil Mitton之議，以一曲"Look Around"參加愛爾蘭全國歌唱大賽，惜在决賽中僅得次名，失掉了由她代表愛爾蘭前往西班牙首都馬德里(Madrid)晉身全歐歌唱大賽(Eurovision Song Contest)的資格。

1970年，她捲土重來，首先藉演繹"All Kinds Of Everything"這歌在本土的全國歌唱大賽决賽中奪冠，繼而於荷蘭首都阿姆斯特丹(Amsterdam)舉行的全歐歌唱大賽(Eurovision Song Contest)决賽中獲勝，擊敗了同場參與的兩位強勁對手Mary Hopkin(英國代表)及Julio Iglesias(西班牙代表)；而因這是愛爾蘭首次取得該項大賽的殊榮，她奏凱返抵都柏林後，頓時很自然地被譽為國家的英雄。此外，她灌錄的《All Kinds Of Everything．Channel Breeze》單曲唱片，原是於全歐歌唱大賽(Eurovision Song Contest)舉行的一星期前出版，但自她在是次比賽一登龍門後，該曲迅即大受本土及世界眾多國家樂迷們的歡迎，唱片銷量超越二百多萬張。

《I Will Follow You．With A Little Love》是繼《All Kinds Of Everything．Channel Breeze》之後推出的單曲唱片，但市場反應不大理想。同年6月，Decca唱片公司出版了她首張的個人長行唱片《All Kinds Of Everything》。

1971至1973年間，她灌錄了總共七張的單曲唱片，分別是1971年的《Who Put The Lights Out?．Always A Few Things》、《Today．Don't Cry My Love》、《Isn't It A Pity?．Swallow Fly Away》，1972年的《New Days...New Ways．Love Is A Friend of Mine》、《Crossword Puzzle．Where Is He?》，1973年的《Do I Still Figure In Your Life?．A Ticket To Nowhere》及《Corner Of The Sky／Morning Glow．Sunday Monday Tuesday》，惟只得"Who Put The Lights Out?"這歌曾上至英國樂壇流行榜的第14位。

1974年中，經歷了約三年間頗差強人意的灌唱成績後，Dana轉投一新成立的唱片公司：GTO，開展她歌唱事業中的新一頁；而她舊屬的Rex唱片公司，也於同年推出她的第二張、亦是Rex為她出版的最後一張長行唱片《The World Of Dana》。
